Book Project
We finished reading our read aloud book, All About Sam by Lois Lowry. The first graders absolutely loved this book! They made dioramas of their favorite scenes to celebrate the end of the story. It was a fun project to do on a rainy Friday afternoon!

Flynn Companion Workshop
We were so fortunate to work with Flynn Teaching Artist, Susanna Olson today. The children learned about our upcoming show, Celestial Being. They pretended the floor was the Flynn stage and acted out scenes. Susanna guided them to try voices and actions in different ways to express different feelings. The first graders even got to see how different lights on stage can help with the action. They are excited to see the show next week!

Our Week
We had a busy week in first grade! We observed the tomato plants and recorded observations in our science logs. We also added food coloring to a jar to watch the water travel through the celery.

We practiced reading and spelling words with 2 syllables.

We continued writing realistic fiction stories and practiced using effective dialogue.

We did several exercises and stretches for movement breaks. Catman helped us stretch and wake up!

On Friday we had another Four Winds lesson and learned about forest birds. The children learned about the different layers of plants in a forest and how birds avoid competition by feeding in different areas. They searched for birds in the forest and played games to learn the different layers. Thank you Allison and Heather for leading this month's lesson!

Lunch Bunch
The first graders enjoyed eating their lunches with me this afternoon. We gathered in the classroom and listened to the story, Charlie Goes to School. We enjoyed hearing how the dog tried to start his own school even though the animals weren't the best students! Ask your child to tell you about our lunch bunch.

Plants
The first graders observed the bean seeds we planted before vacation and noticed there were leaves growing now! They also planted their own tomato seeds. They will watch them grow and change over the next few weeks and record their observations in their science logs.  We will also experiment with some of the plants to see how light affects growth.
