Happy Holidays!
Yesterday the first and third graders watched the classic Dr. Seuss story, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Then we enjoyed cookies and cocoa at the end of the day. Thank you PTO for organizing this yummy treat! Have a wonderful and safe holiday break!

Sing Along and Craft Fair
It was so nice to see so many families at our Sing Along and Craft Fair yesterday afternoon. The opening song with the lanterns was amazing! Thank you for all of your support at our craft fair. We sold out within 20 minutes and made $145! Lily C and Savannah will join the other shoppers tomorrow morning to buy gifts for our adopted families. This is such a wonderful UID tradition!

Counting Strips
The first graders are busy writing numbers on counting strips during math workshop. They are practicing writing as many numbers in counting order as they can without reversing digits or transposing them (writing digits in the wrong order).  Their counting strips are getting very long!

Sharing
The first graders were very excited to start sharing time last week! They are enjoying the pictures, books, drawings, and special things their friends are bringing each day. Thank you for helping your child find a special item to share on his/her day.

Four Winds - Predators and Prey
Kim and Andy volunteered to teach the next Four Winds lesson. The children learned how animals use their senses to catch prey or avoid becoming prey. They learned about different adaptations that help animals survive. They also played a predator/prey game to learn about the challenges of finding food and what happens when the groups are not balanced (too many predators or prey). Lauren also helped with the tag game so thank you to all 3 volunteers for helping this month!

UJFD Field Trip
On Monday we visited the Underhill Jericho Fire Department to learn about this important place in our community. Firefighters Sean and Harry discussed fire safety, showed us their tools and gear, and gave us a tour of the station. The first graders even got to go into the fire trucks and ambulance! Please remember to talk with your child about your home family safety plan. We really appreciate our community helpers taking the time to teach us about fire safety!

Author Visit
The first and second graders were very excited to meet a local author today. Linda Cruise, author of Around the World from A to Z, shared her book with students. She discussed the writing and publishing process. She shared how much fun it is to write books but it takes a lot of hard work and practice. I will send home an order form on Monday if you wish to order a copy of her book.

Community Map Project
First graders have been busy taking pictures of different rooms in our building. Mr. Wells took them on a tour of special rooms that children usually do not visit like the boiler room and storage closets. Mr. Baron is helping us create a student friendly map with pictures to show new families where places are in our school. We will also create a virtual tour of the school using some of the photos later this year.

Four Winds
We had our first Four Winds lesson last Friday. Terry and Lauren taught the children all about spiders. They learned about different kinds, their body parts, behaviors, and how they catch their prey. Ask your child to share some fun facts we learned that day. Thank you Lauren and Terry for leading our first lesson this year!
